A Bit About the Detox Concept

Detoxing has been a bit of a buzzword in the healthy-eating and dieting community for a long while, such that the true meaning has become a little obfuscated behind people throwing odd recipes at you.

At the most basic level, detoxing is the process of periodically removing toxins from our system.

You might choose to do this on a regular basis, or you might choose to do this after a period of time in which you were particularly indulgent, say, Christmas for example.

Detox juices and smoothies are a concentrated form of that mindset.

While, originally, a detox could’ve been simply avoiding toxic substances for a week or two, detox smoothies actually break away from that passive style and become active ingredients in the detoxification process.

For example, say you’re feeling under the weather because you drunk too much alcohol over the Christmas period.

To remedy that, a shot or two of general-purpose, immune-boosting, electrolyte replacing smoothies or juices could be perfect.

In that smoothie, perhaps you would include charcoal (to help clean the contents of the stomach), foods high in vitamin C (to boost your immune system), and bananas (to add some electrolytes to your system).

Detoxing is quite a personal process, and since it’s your body, only you really know what you can do to help yourself.

For some, a green detox smoothie might be just right, while for others, something protein-heavy might be what the doctor ordered.

Some Detox Drinks To Lose Weight

Lemon and Ginger Detox

This classic pairing can show amazing weight loss results. Ideally, consume this detox drink in the mornings, on an empty stomach.

It can help to boost metabolism in the mornings, as well as acting as a gentle appetite suppressant for a short period of time.


  • Boiling water.
  • 2-3 slices of lemon.
  • Thumb-sized piece of ginger, peeled and grated or chopped finely.


  • Place a few chunky slices of lemon (2-3) and roughly a thumb-sized piece of grated ginger into a tea strainer.
  • Pour the hot water over those ingredients until they’re completely covered. Give them a gentle stir to ensure they’re sufficiently agitated.
  • Allow the drink to infuse at this point for roughly 5-10 minutes, then remove the strainer and the ingredients.
  • Give it a taste, and optionally add honey or maple syrup for sweetness.

Cinnamon Detox Drink

This uniquely flavored ingredient in a classic weight-loss staple. Best consumed as a type of tea, take this when you go to bed for the best results.

The spice helps to boost metabolism, as well as burning fat: just what you need in a weight-loss detox.


  • Boiling water.
  • 1 stick of cinnamon per mug of tea.


  • Start by roughly crushing one cinnamon stick per mug of tea, and add them to a tea strainer.
  • Pour freshly boiled water over the crushed cinnamon, and gently agitate them before leaving to infuse for three to five minutes.
  • Remove the strainer, and drink before bed for optimum results.

Cucumber and Mint Detox Drink

This is a personal favorite flavor combination of mine, so I’m really glad to hear that it’s a great detox too!

The ingredients will help to remove toxins from the body, and they also help to promote good digestions.

This infusion can take place while cold, so simply throw some mint leaves and a few slices of cucumber into a jug of water, and then sip throughout the day. Delicious!


  • Half an average-sized cucumber, sliced into 1cm slices.
  • A handful of fresh mint leaves.
  • 1 liter of water.


  • As a note before we get started: this recipe is best made the night before to ensure a long infusion.
  • Add the liter of water to a large container with a wide top to allow for easy stirring.
  • Add in the cucumber and mint leaves, and stir roughly with a blunt implement like a wooden spoon. Stirring roughly will bruise the ingredients, and encourage them to release more goodness into the drink.
  • Leave to infuse overnight in the fridge, and pour over ice in the morning.

Orange-Carrot Ginger Detox

This is the second appearance of ginger on this list, which show how powerful it can be in detox.

Ginger is really the powerhouse of this drink, aiding digestion and weight loss, while the other ingredients are great for their vitamin C content and flavor.


  • 1 large carrot.
  • 500ml of water.
  • 1 medium orange, peeled.
  • 1 small root of ginger.


  • Begin by setting up your blender and adding in all the ingredients. If you’d like to help the blender a little, feel free to chop up the fruits and vegetables a little.
  • Pulse the blender for ten seconds at thirty-second intervals until the drink is smooth and rich. Serve over ice.

Pomegranate and Beetroot Juice

Pomegranate and beetroot go together surprisingly well, and they also have stunning health properties.

They’ve both been used in traditional Indian Ayurveda medicine for a long time, for numerous benefits.

Pomegranate is full of antioxidants and great for your immune system, while beetroot’s brilliant for helping to maintain your digestive health.

This one is definitely worth a try!


  • 1 pomegranate, seeded.
  • 1 medium beetroot/2 small beetroots, peeled.
  • 500ml of water.


  • Start by setting up your blender and adding your prepared ingredients to the jug. Make sure to add the pomegranate seeds, but throw away the flesh of the pomegranate: it is tough and doesn’t taste good.
  • Pulse the blender for ten seconds at thirty-second intervals until the drink is smooth and rich. Serve over ice.
